About this job
*About the role*
MDM Chimney Solutions is hiring a helper for its masonry and installation division. The role supports chimney crowns, tuckpointing, chase cover replacements, full chimney rebuilds, and brick and stone repairs. It also includes helper work on fireplace and insert installations with our gas technician and sweep crew.
This is an entry-level position for someone who wants to learn the masonry trade from the ground up. Co-owner Dean Branham mentors this role directly. Masonry is where Dean built his career, and he personally oversees training and advancement from helper to independent mason.
*About MDM Chimney Solutions*
We're a locally-owned chimney and fireplace company serving homeowners across Baltimore, Catonsville, Halethorpe, Ellicott City, and Howard County. We've built our reputation the slow way — by doing careful, honest work in our neighbors' homes and being the company a customer calls back five years later when they want it done right. We don't oversell, we don't cut corners on craft, and we don't take shortcuts on the parts that don't show.
*What you'll do*
* Rebuild chimney crowns — form construction, expansion joint placement, wash slope, finish
* Tuckpointing and repointing of brick chimneys — original mortar identification, matching, raking out, recompaction
* Replace chase covers — sizing, fasteners, sealant, integration with the surround
* Full chimney rebuilds, brick replacement, stone repair
* Helper work on fireplace and insert installs alongside the gas tech and sweep crews
* On the MDM Masonry side (Path 1, as it comes up): concrete pads, brick steps, retaining walls
*Who we're looking for —*
*— Install Helper / Trainee:* You come from general construction, trades, the military, or a related background. Strong work ethic, comfortable with hand tools and power tools, willing to put in the dirty work while learning a real craft. You'll start as the second set of hands on installs and ramp into independent masonry over 12 to 24 months. Dean mentors you directly on the masonry side; you'll work alongside Path 1 masons and pick up the craft on real jobs, not in a classroom.
*Required either way*
* Valid MD driver's license, clean driving record, background check
* Comfortable with the physical demands — heavy lifting, weather, dust, dirt
* Comfortable working from scaffolding and at heights
* Plain-spoken with homeowners — we're invited guests in people's homes and on their roofs
*Compensation & benefits — per path*
Pay is competitive and based on credentials and experience — Benefits include paid time off, a health stipend, and a 401(k) with company match. MDM funds training and certification opportunities if you choose to pursue formal masonry credentialing.
* *(Install Helper / Trainee)* — MDM provides all masonry tools, fuel/transport coordination, and PPE. You ride along with the assigned crew lead in a company vehicle. No personal vehicle is required to do this job. As you ramp into independent work, the company vehicle assignment is revisited.
